“Integration through work” is one of the cornerstones of success in order to ensure a smooth integration of migrants / refugees in general into their new living environment. Successful integration through work does not end with signing the employment contract. Workplace integration is an interactive process that requires efforts from all parties involved: the migrant worker, the employer and staff and in some areas of work even the employers’ customers or clients. Besides very practical and legal aspects, intercultural and social processes are the key in order to pave the way for smooth workplace integration.

The MaWIC project has developed an array of tools and approaches that can facilitate the process of "integration through work." The Migration and Workplace Integration Coach is at the heart of the MaWIC project. The role of the MaWI-Coach is to facilitate and support the process of workplace integration by using coaching approaches and techniques coupled with approaches from intercultural communication and competences. The MaWIC project has developed a competence profile that describes this role in detail, as well as a training programme that endows future MaWI-Coaches with the necessary knowledge, skills and competences they need in order to fulfil this important task.

In addition, the MaWIC project has developed recommendations and toolboxes that further facilitate the workplace integration of migrants. Our approaches and tools are targeted at (future) employers of migrants but also their staff, HR departments, training providers active in this area, NGOs, social partners, etc...

What did we work on?

Workplace integration is a key element for the sustainability of integration processes and a challenge to be faced by employers, migrants and colleagues. For this reason, MaWIC has developed different outcomes to facilitate workplace integration.

“Migration and Workplace Integration Coaches” (MaWICoaches) are facilitators for the successful workplace integration of migrants. Their role was shaped at the beginning of the project by the development of the profile including required knowledge, skills and competences.

A training course was developed for the "Migration and Workplace Integration Coach" using a variety of intertwined learning approaches, such as Flipped Classroom, Distance Learning, Work-Based Learning, Transnational Learning and virtual classroom elements.

The MaWIC project also defined a workplace integration concept addressing the employers' side of the integration process with adequate tools and instruments. Furthermore a migration and integration support concept was developed, which addresses the support staff such as coaches and trainers to facilitate the workplace integration process of migrants. Both concepts resulted in a corresponding toolbox, the MaWIC Workplace Integration Toolbox and the MaWIC Integration Support Toolbox are meant to support Migration and Workplace Integration Professionals and those fulfilling such roles in their everyday work with migrants and their employers.

MaWIC also developed recommendations for politics and praxis to ensure a sustainable integration of migrants at the workplace. The transnational partner consortium generated guidelines for the application at micro, meso and macro level, addressing companies, social partners, chambers and politics by exploiting the results and perspectives of the project.
